Nintendo's digital Switch game sharing plan could be so much simpler

In the final days of our pre-Switch 2 world, Nintendo is trying to rethink how sharing games works. The biggest announcement from the company's latest Direct was its upcoming Virtual Game Cards feature, a new approach to sharing digital games that improves on the company's current system, but still carries limitations that keep it from feeling truly modern. Virtual Game Cards attempt to make digital games as easy to share as physical ones. That starts with the company visually representing games as "cards" and using the language of loading and ejecting them, and extends to how simple they are to share. Two Switch consoles logged into your Nintendo Account can share any digital game just by "ejecting" it from one and "loading" it on another.


AI 'godfather' predicts another revolution in the tech in next five years

One of the "godfathers" of modern artificial intelligence has predicted a further revolution in the technology by the end of the decade, and says current systems are too limited to create domestic robots and fully automated cars. Yann LeCun, the chief AI scientist at Mark Zuckerberg's Meta, said new breakthroughs are needed in order for the systems to understand and interact with the physical world. LeCun spoke as one of seven engineers who were awarded the 500,000 Queen Elizabeth prize for engineering on Tuesday for their contributions to machine learning, a cornerstone of AI. Recent breakthroughs in the sector, led by the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, have heightened expectations โ€“ and fears โ€“ of systems gaining human levels of intelligence. However, LeCun said there was some way to go before AIs matched humans or animals, with the current cutting-edge technology excelling at "manipulating language" but not at understanding the physical world.

Overview This document describes a pragmatic approach on how to migrate enterprise computer systems to new systems that could evolve forever, address the whole organisations and that are integrated. Governance aspects are as important, if not more, than purely technical IT aspects: human resources, supply chains, call for tenders, and similar. Migration implies not starting from a green field. Style of this document {Principle} Lie if it helps and restate the obvious. Enterprise IT architecture is a complex field. Efforts have been made to make this document accessible to the widest possible public, including non-IT people. To make concepts more accessible, they might be introduced informally without being technically strict (lie) and sprinkled with bits of tutorials (restate). For the gory details follow the references. It could be anything: from one integrated system to many disconnected systems, from properly developed systems to spreadsheets, from internal developed code to external libraries, etc. The first priority is to ensure the functioning of the current system, imperfect as it might be. Avoid the syndrome of not maintaining the current system because it is a waste of money. It is an error to channel most of the IT resources into the new wonderful system on the way. The first step is to prepare emergency manuals for the current system. The guiding scenario for preparing these manuals is that present IT staff operating/maintaining the current system disappear from one day to the next; unpolished manuals would do. New IT replacement staff without any previous knowledge should have a sporting chance of operating/maintaining the current system with the help of emergency manuals which must be printed and stored in a place easy to find.


In the Rush to AI, We Can't Afford to Trust Big Tech

Game-Theoretical Analysis of Reviewer Rewards in Peer-Review Journal Systems: Analysis and Experimental Evaluation using Deep Reinforcement Learning

In this paper, we navigate the intricate domain of reviewer rewards in open-access academic publishing, leveraging the precision of mathematics and the strategic acumen of game theory. We conceptualize the prevailing voucher-based reviewer reward system as a two-player game, subsequently identifying potential shortcomings that may incline reviewers towards binary decisions. To address this issue, we propose and mathematically formalize an alternative reward system with the objective of mitigating this bias and promoting more comprehensive reviews. We engage in a detailed investigation of the properties and outcomes of both systems, employing rigorous game-theoretical analysis and deep reinforcement learning simulations. Our results underscore a noteworthy divergence between the two systems, with our proposed system demonstrating a more balanced decision distribution and enhanced stability. This research not only augments the mathematical understanding of reviewer reward systems, but it also provides valuable insights for the formulation of policies within journal review system. Our contribution to the mathematical community lies in providing a game-theoretical perspective to a real-world problem and in the application of deep reinforcement learning to simulate and understand this complex system.

A few years ago, I'd sometimes find myself needing to answer the question, "Why does Future Perfect, which is supposed to be focused on the world's most crucial problems, write so much about AI?" After 2022, though, I don't often have to answer that one anymore. This was the year AI went from a niche subject to a mainstream one. In 2022, powerful image generators like Stable Diffusion made it clear that the design and art industry was at risk of mass automation, leading artists to demand answers -- which meant that the details of how modern machine learning systems learn and are trained became mainstream questions. Meta pushed releases of both Blenderbot (which was a flop) and the world-conquering, duplicitous Diplomacy-playing agent Cicero (which wasn't).


Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: A world of endless possibilities

If you read news, follow research articles, and discuss the future, then you would have already read about how the healthcare industry is in dire need of AI. If I were to pick the prominent industries which can drive sustainable growth healthcare would be on the top. Perhaps it is the reason that majority of new research now includes terms "renewable, sustainable, and eco friendly". Humans have realized that growth at the risk of environmental deterioration, and deteriorating human health is no growth at all. There is another parallel industry that is being explored by the inventors and it is "artificial intelligence".


How Perfect Will AI Need to Be?

Humans are working artificial intelligence programs (AI) into business, government and daily life. Like with any new tool or technology, we start to see the initial technology flaws the more we are exposed to it. So we are now in the midst of a moment where AI is under the microscope, with policy makers picking apart AI contributions and demanding that AI meet high standards of performance and social consequence. This is a healthy process. Society should always examine impactful tools and push for the tools to work better.
